How to Book a DriveTest Appointment in Ontario

One of the first things new drivers get wrong is assuming they have to book every test at DriveTest. You do not. Some tests are walk-in and some need an appointment, and knowing which is which saves you a wasted trip. Here is exactly when you need a DriveTest appointment and how to set one up.
The G1 knowledge test is walk-in
You do not book your G1 knowledge test. It is a walk-in service at DriveTest centres, so you simply arrive during opening hours, take a number, and write the test when you are called. When you need a DriveTest appointment
Appointments are for road tests, not the written one. When you are ready to move from G1 to G2, and later from G2 to a full G, you book a road-test appointment for each. Those cannot be walked in, because an examiner has to ride with you, so the centre has to reserve a specific time. That is the point where booking matters.
How to book, change or cancel
You can book a road test online at the DriveTest website, by phone, or in person at a centre. You will need your licence number and a payment method, and the system shows you the available dates at nearby centres. If your plans change, reschedule or cancel through the same online account rather than simply not showing up, since a missed appointment can cost you the fee and push your next available date back by weeks.
Bring the right vehicle for a road test
A road-test appointment has one requirement the knowledge test does not: a suitable vehicle. You must arrive in a car that is plated, insured and roadworthy, with working signals, brakes and horn. If the examiner finds a safety problem, the test is cancelled before it starts. So a booked appointment is only useful if the car you bring is ready for it.
Plan around the wait
Walk-in knowledge tests can mean a wait at busy times, and popular road-test slots book up weeks ahead, especially in spring and summer.
