Regulatory
Stop
Come to a complete stop. Go only when the way is clear.
What it means
A stop sign is always a red octagon — it is the only sign with this eight-sided shape, so you can recognise it even from behind or in poor light. It means a full, complete stop every single time, not a rolling slow-down.
What to do
Come to a complete stop at the stop line, crosswalk, or edge of the intersection. Wait until the way is clear of traffic and pedestrians, then proceed.
