It happens more than you would think. Passing the G1 starts with showing up prepared for the visit itself, not just the questions. Here is exactly what to bring to a DriveTest centre for your G1.

Acceptable identification

This is the part people get wrong. You need identification that proves three things: your legal name, your date of birth, and your signature. Some documents cover all three on their own, and others need to be combined. A passport is the simplest single document. If you do not have one, you will usually need a combination, so check the current accepted-ID list on the official Ontario page before you go and bring the originals, not photocopies.

A way to pay the fee

Ontario charges a single package fee for the graduated licensing process, and you pay it when you apply. Bring a payment method the centre accepts. It is a small thing that stops a lot of people at the door, so confirm the current fee and accepted payment types ahead of time rather than assuming.

Your glasses or contacts

Before the knowledge test, you take a vision test. If you need glasses or contacts to see clearly, wear them or bring them. Passing the vision test with correction simply means your licence will note that you must wear it when you drive, which is normal and nothing to worry about. Not being able to see the chart, on the other hand, ends your visit early.

Time, and a little patience

Give yourself more time than you think you need. DriveTest centres get busy, and rushing in stressed is the worst way to sit a test. Arrive early, take a breath, and let the nerves settle before you start.

What happens on the day

Once your ID and fee are sorted, the visit is straightforward: you take the vision test, then the knowledge test of 40 multiple-choice questions split between rules of the road and traffic signs. Pass with at least 80 percent in each section and you have your photo taken and walk out with a G1 the same day. There is no appointment needed for the knowledge test at most centres, but confirm your local one.

Do the studying part right too

Bringing the right documents gets you in the door. Knowing the material gets you the licence. If you want to walk in certain, FreeG1 gives you free practice questions, every Ontario traffic sign, and full mock exams scored exactly like the real G1.

Keep reading: how the test day runs and a week-long study plan.

Sources: Ontario Ministry of Transportation and ServiceOntario.
